Vertical Hollow Shaft Motors Information

ABB Vertical Hollow Shaft Motors

Overview

ABB Vertical Hollow Shaft (VHS) Motors are NEMA frame electric motors specifically designed for vertical turbine pump service. The series is intended for deep well pumping applications where the motor is mounted above the pump and transmits power through a hollow shaft arrangement that allows the pump shaft to pass through the motor. Available in both Weather Protected Type I (WP1) and Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) configurations, the VHS product line supports municipal, agricultural, industrial, and water infrastructure applications requiring reliable operation under continuous thrust loading.

The series combines heavy-duty mechanical construction with pump-specific design features intended to simplify installation, maintenance, and long-term operation. ABB VHS motors are engineered for compatibility with standard NEMA vertical hollow shaft pump systems, providing a drop-in solution for new installations, replacements, and system upgrades.

Design and Construction

ABB VHS motors utilize a cast iron frame construction designed for durability in demanding pumping environments. The hollow shaft configuration permits direct connection to vertical turbine pump shafts through an adjustable coupling arrangement located at the top of the motor. This design provides access for pump shaft adjustment and maintenance without significant modification to the motor installation.

The motors incorporate a non-reverse ratchet (NRR) system that prevents reverse rotation of the motor and pump assembly following shutdown. This feature helps protect pump components from reverse spinning conditions that can occur in vertical turbine installations. Models in larger frame sizes utilize double-stacked thrust bearing arrangements designed to accommodate the elevated thrust loads associated with deep well pumping applications.

Additional construction features include oversized conduit boxes for field wiring access, space heaters for moisture protection in harsh environments, precision-balanced rotors, and oil reservoir systems that support thrust bearing cooling and lubrication.

Drive and Motor System

The VHS series is available in three-phase configurations and is suitable for inverter-duty operation in accordance with NEMA MG1 requirements. Motors are offered with premium-efficiency and high-efficiency designs depending on application requirements and regional efficiency standards.

The series supports multiple starting methods, including part-winding start and wye-delta start configurations on applicable models. Class F insulation with Class B temperature rise is utilized to provide thermal margin during operation. PTC thermistors and space heaters are incorporated to support motor protection and reliability in challenging operating environments.

Mechanical Design

A defining feature of the VHS design is the location of the coupling at the top of the motor. This arrangement provides direct access to the pump shaft for adjustment and servicing, which is particularly important in deep well vertical turbine pump installations. The hollow shaft system allows power transmission while accommodating the long lineshaft configurations commonly found in water well and vertical turbine applications.

The motors are machined for elevated thrust loading, with larger frame sizes providing extra-high thrust capability for demanding pump duties. The combination of guide bearings, thrust bearings, and robust frame construction is intended to support continuous operation under the axial loading conditions generated by vertical turbine pumps.

Enclosures and Environmental Protection

ABB offers the VHS series in both WP1 and TEFC enclosure designs. WP1 models provide weather-protected construction suitable for many outdoor pumping installations, while TEFC models offer a more enclosed design for environments where additional protection from dust, moisture, and contaminants is desirable.

The motors are UL listed and include features intended to support operation in outdoor, municipal, agricultural, and industrial environments. Space heaters and weather-resistant construction help reduce the effects of condensation and environmental exposure during idle periods and seasonal operation.

Applications

ABB VHS motors are designed primarily for vertical turbine pump systems used in water movement and fluid handling applications. Common installations include deep well pumping systems, agricultural irrigation networks, municipal water supply systems, wastewater treatment facilities, cooling tower circulation systems, and fire protection pumping stations.

The combination of high thrust capability, vertical pump compatibility, and heavy-duty construction makes the series suitable for applications where reliable operation and long service life are required under continuous pumping conditions.

Maintenance Features

The VHS motor design emphasizes accessibility and serviceability for pump maintenance personnel. Top-mounted coupling access allows pump shaft adjustment and servicing without extensive disassembly, while the hollow shaft configuration supports maintenance procedures commonly associated with vertical turbine pump systems.

Features such as removable top covers, oversized conduit boxes, accessible lubrication systems, and standardized NEMA frame dimensions aid installation and maintenance activities. The drop-in design also simplifies replacement of existing NEMA vertical hollow shaft motors, reducing downtime during motor changeouts.
