PWA Low Flow ANSI Process Pumps Information

Features & Benefits

When a customer is looking at the PWA-LF (Low Flow) series, they are likely dealing with a specific engineering challenge: Low Flow/High Head applications.

Standard ANSI pumps are designed for high-volume movement. When you try to run a standard pump at very low flows, it vibrates, builds up heat, and suffers from "radial thrust" that snaps shafts and kills seals. The PWA-LF is the surgical tool designed to solve those specific problems.

1. The Engineering Difference: Circular Volute

Unlike a standard pump that has a spiral-shaped (volute) casing, the PWA-LF features a precisely machined circular volute.

The Benefit: In a standard pump, running at low flow creates an unbalanced pressure distribution around the impeller. This "radial load" pushes the shaft to the side.

The PWA-LF Solution: The circular casing equalizes the pressure around the impeller. This eliminates shaft deflection, which is the #1 cause of mechanical seal failure in low-flow environments.

2. The Radial Vane Impeller

The PWA-LF uses a specialized multi-vane open radial impeller.

Reduced Pulsation: Standard impellers create "pulsations" when choked down to low flows. The radial vane design provides smooth, stable hydraulics.

Exceptional Strength: These impellers are fully shrouded to provide maximum vane strength, ensuring they don’t flex or fatigue under the high pressures often associated with low-flow service.

Integrated Balance Holes: These reduce thrust loads on the bearings, extending the life of the entire power end.

3. Performance Stability

Customers need to know that the PWA-LF provides a wider "allowable operating range."

If you run a standard pump too far to the left of its performance curve (at low flow), you deal with "recirculation" and heat. The PWA-LF is hydraulically stable even at flows as low as 1 GPM, allowing for precise process control without damaging the equipment.

4. Common "Killer" Applications

The PWA-LF is the go-to choice for specific industrial scenarios:

  1. Chemical Injection: Where precise, low-volume dosing is required at high pressures.
  2. Shower/Spray Headers: In Pulp and Paper or Food & Beverage.
  3. Seal Flush Plans: Providing high-pressure clean fluid to other larger pumps.
  4. Pilot Plants: Where flow rates are naturally lower than full-scale production.

5. Shared Benefits with the Standard PWA

Even though the hydraulics are specialized, the PWA-LF still carries all the premium PumpWorks "Standard" features:

Carbon Steel Case: ASTM A216 WCB is standard (not brittle iron).

5-Year Unconditional Warranty: On the Power Frame.

100% Interchangeable: The PWA-LF "Wet End" fits on standard ANSI B73.1 power ends and baseplates. You can swap a problematic standard pump for a PWA-LF without moving your motor or piping.

Summary: Why choose the LF?

FeatureStandard PWAPWA-LF (Low Flow)
Best Flow Range50 – 5,000 GPM1 – 50 GPM
Hydraulic StabilityUnstable at low flowsExtremely Stable

Seal LifeDecreased at low flowsMaximum/Extended

Are you currently experiencing high vibration or frequent seal failures on a pump that is being throttled back? I can help you check the curve to see if a PWA-LF is the correct hydraulic fit.
