In an ideal operating environment, the PumpWorks ANSI Pump Cover (Backplate) is a static part that can last for years. However, in the real world of chemical processing, it is subject to erosion and mechanical stress.

You should normally look to replace the cover kit during these specific scenarios:

1. Internal Bore Erosion ("Wash-out")

The most common reason for replacement is wear on the internal surfaces of the seal chamber.

• The Cause: If you are pumping abrasive slurries or fluids with solids, the turbulence inside the chamber acts like a liquid sandblaster.

• The Sign: During a seal change, look for deep grooves or a "wavy" texture inside the bore. If the metal has thinned significantly, it can no longer safely contain the pressure or provide the correct hydraulic flow to cool the seal.

2. Gland Surface Pitting

The flat face where the mechanical seal gland bolts onto the cover must be perfectly smooth.

• The Sign: If you see pitting, corrosion, or deep scratches on this mating surface, the mechanical seal’s static O-ring or gasket will fail to seat.

• The Fix: While minor scratches can sometimes be machined flat, a cover kit is usually more cost-effective than the labor and machine-shop time required to true an old, pitted backplate.

3. Change in Sealing Technology

Oftentimes, a cover isn't replaced because it’s broken, but because it’s obsolete.

• The Scenario: If you are upgrading from old-fashioned pump packing to a modern dual-cartridge mechanical seal, your old "Standard Bore" cover likely won't have enough room.

• The Move: You would replace it with a Big Bore or Tapered Bore kit to provide the necessary space for seal cooling and lubrication.

4. Distorted Gasket Seats

The "fit" where the cover meets the pump casing is a critical metal-to-metal or gasketed joint.

• The Sign: If the pump has been subjected to extreme pipe strain or over-torquing of the bolts, the cover can warp. If you find yourself constantly dealing with "nuisance leaks" at the casing gasket despite using new gaskets, the cover is likely warped and needs replacement.
