Cases Information
Because the casing is the most substantial (and expensive) component of the "wet end," knowing when to repair versus when to replace is critical for your maintenance budget.
When to Replace an ANSI Pump Case
While PumpWorks' Carbon Steel cases are incredibly durable and repairable, there are four "Point of No Return" scenarios where replacement is necessary:
1. Wall Thickness Depletion
If the internal walls have thinned by more than 20–25% of their original casting thickness due to corrosion or erosion, the pressure-containing integrity is compromised.
Tip: Use ultrasonic thickness testing during teardowns to verify the "hull" of the pump is still safe for your maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP).
2. "Wash-out" at the Gasket Surfaces
If the serrated finish on the suction or discharge flanges—or the critical fit where the seal chamber/backplate meets the case—is deeply scarred (often called "wire-drawing" or "wash-out"), it will be impossible to maintain a leak-proof seal.
3. Pitting Beyond Weld-Repair Limits
While Carbon Steel is weldable, if the pitting is so widespread (the "Swiss cheese" effect) that welding would require rebuilding more than 30% of the internal surface area, the thermal stresses of the repair can warp the case. At that point, a new casting is safer and more cost-effective.
4. Cracks in the Pressure Vessel
Any crack in a casing—whether caused by water hammer, freezing fluid, or piping strain—is an automatic replacement. In a high-pressure chemical environment, a "repaired" crack is a catastrophic failure waiting to happen.
Cross-Compatibility: The "Drop-In" Advantage
The short answer is yes. Because PumpWorks designs their pumps to the ANSI B73.1 (Horizontal) and B73.2 (In-Line) standards, their cases are designed for 100% interchangeability with other major brands.
What can a PumpWorks Case replace?
You can bolt a PumpWorks casing directly onto the piping and power ends of:
Goulds: 3196 Series
Durco (Flowserve): Mark 3 Series
Peerless: 8196 Series
Summit: 2196 Series
Why do owners "Cross-Pollinate" brands?
Many plant managers keep their existing power ends but switch to PumpWorks cases during repairs because:
Material Upgrade: They can swap out a failed Goulds/Durco ductile iron case for a PumpWorks Carbon Steel case without changing their piping or motor.
Availability: If an OEM has a 12-week lead time, PumpWorks often has the equivalent ANSI case in stock for immediate shipment.
Pressure Rating: Owners can often "upgrade" to a Class 300# case while keeping their standard power end, provided the bolt patterns match the ANSI size designated (e.g., a 2x3-8).
Critical Check for Compatibility
When swapping a PumpWorks case onto a different brand's baseplate, always verify the "S" Dimension (the distance from the suction flange to the center of the discharge). Since it is an ANSI standard, it should match perfectly, but it’s always best practice to confirm before the old case is cut out of the line.
Would you like me to look up the ANSI "S" dimensions for a specific pump size to confirm it will fit your existing layout?
